March 2, 2010
Today we, Glen & April, Glenda, Chuck, Clint & Burly the dog, Gordon & I went riding. Left from our home and headed southwest, riding close to I10. This first picture is of a stone oven. One finds the most interesting of things in the desert.

The second picture is of someone's grave. We were discussing the depth they would have been buried. The cross is so weathered there is nothing left to tell the name of the unfortunate soul who has this as a final resting place.
The third picture is of I10 from one of the high spots we found ourselves. We ended up crossing under the highway trying to find a way to a mine
but came to a dead end, so went back under the highway again. That was a bit nerve racking as there is a constant stream of traffic running over your head.

The fourth picture is taken at the top of the pass where we stopped for lunch. The trail in the distance is the one we just road over.

The fifth picture is us stopped for lunch. What a view. From left to right: April, Clint, Gordon, Glenda, Glen & Chuck. The trail in the distance is the one we are going to ride over.

The sixth & seventh pictures are of Beer Hill and the view from the top of the hill. I, or should I say, April, found a Saguaro boot in a dead cactus. I had been looking for one, or for something we could use in our own desert garden. What is a boot you ask. Well, when the birds peck holes in the cactus it heals itself by building a skin around the hole and it does look like the toe of a boot. We also found many Saguaro which had been blown down in the horrific winds we had this winter. These large cacti are huge, but the root system is unbelievably shallow, and when the ground is so wet and the winds so strong there is nothing anchoring them.

We also came across another stone oven. The eighth and nineth pictures are of the oven and then the area we found it in. Gordon picked up a couple of Ocotillo ribs for walking sticks.

The last picture is of Glenda, Glen and April. Glen is checking his map, looking for places we have been or maybe places we want to go! He is great for marking everything on his map.

We put on 77.8 km. It was a long ride but a very pretty one. I was, however, glad to get home because my wrist and shoulder were crying a bit.

The group stopped by for cheese and crackers. After they left we cleaned up and went to LaCasa del Rancho for their $1 tacos.
