Well! Here I am - back again after a couple of weeks of being without internet service. We left Pilot Knob west of Yuma on March 8th with destination Ajo, AZ, arriving at a spot in BLM land about 2 miles SW of Ajo in mid afternoon. Oh! what a beautiful spot to camp in. Here are some pictures taken around our spot. We have Organ Pipe Cactus which we didn't have in Quartzsite, and lots of Saguaros.
Upon arriving at this spot we discovered that the propane hose from the tank to the fridge & stove had been severed in transit with us losing almost 30# of propane, so Doug and Gord headed into Ajo to find repairs. It was finally fixed around supper time. While we were in this area we went on four great rides in the desert and saw the most interesting cacti and ironwood trees. We were a bit too early for the flowers. Too bad, but it has not been as warm as usual.
One day we went into Ajo to the cemetery. Spoke with the lady in charge. She is in her early 80ies and is going to retire soon. She has been trying to get the townspeople and the winter visitors to take an interest in providing headstones or crosses or whatever to name the graves that have no ID. I thought that sounded like a good project. When I went to church on Sunday, I was very early (25 minutes) and the Bishop was about the only one there, so we were able to have a nice conversation. He said he had hoped some members would take an interest, but none have so far. What a different meeting than Quartzsite. This ward is full of babies and small children, lots of young families and no too many oldies. In fact, the family who sat in front of me had five children and the oldest was 6.
Phyllis' birthday was the 15th so after our ride that day we went to town for pizza. Pizza Hut had a special on, 2 large pizzas for $20. Individually they would have been $15.95. Not a bad deal.
On Tuesday, March 16 we left our campsite in Lansdell's bus headed for Puerto Penasco, Mexico. To drive into Mexico you have to have Mexico insurance on the vehicle and Doug insures the bus year round. Just a few miles into Mexico the bus began acting up. There had been fuel problems on their way south, but thought it was taken care of as they had not had any problem after arriving in Parker in February. However, he tinkered and we drove a few hundred yards and it did the same thing again, so once it was running the bus was headed back north across the border. It was a bit disappointing, but plans do change. More work after arriving back at campsite, and it appears okay now. Had something to do with synthetic fuel.
Wednesday, March 17 we did laundry in town. It was 82 F this afternoon. Gord had an afternoon nap and Lansdell's went for a short ride.
Thursday, March 18 we went for a short morning ride which was our last in Ajo area, as we are leaving tomorrow.
